Wier 2, Den Dolder
The "Wier 2" building, designed by VMX Architects, accommodates a closed institution for 24 delinquent, slightly intellectually handicapped with significant behavioural disturbances. The building is one of five comparable institutions that are to be built throughout the country in coming years and that will be known under the umbrella name of 'De Borg'. Wier 2 is situated at the heart of the astounding wood- and heathland surrounding Den Dolder and the design of the building makes it fit perfectly into its natural surroundings. By compacting the volume of the building into four floors, one of which sunk into the ground, hardly any trees needed to be chopped down. Alongside the building there will be two outdoor fenced-in areas which patients can reach via a walkbridge. The basement mostly accommodates the sports and therapy facilities, including a sports centre. The offices are at ground floor level.
